How to respond to client emergency?

Uber clients may experience emergencies that require immediate action. It is possible for Uber clients to get injured on their way to your vehicle. A perfect example of this incident is outlined below.

On a recent morning, an UberX driver approached a client's pick-up address. They noticed the client carrying down a few bags down the three story stairs. The UberX driver rushed over and kindly requested to help this client with her bags. This female client mentioned that she had a few more bags to retrieve upstairs.

The UberX driver loaded the two carry-on bags. He rushed over to help this client carry two large suitcases. However, this client rushed to drag the two large bags down the top of the stairs. She tripped on a stair and tumbled down the top flight.

The driver rushed over as quickly as possible to help this girl stand up and asked if she was hurt. He attended to her right away because this fall looked bad and he assumed she broke a bone and injured herself. This driver requested that she wait in the car while he loaded her remaining bags inside the trunk. Luckily, the luggage fell in front of the client and it blocked her from tumbling down the second flight.

This UberX driver asked the female client if she was okay. She replied back that she had taken falls like this before and would be alright. He advised this female client to be very careful the next time around. She should request help to avoid a dangerous fall.

What are the steps to address an injury that occurs due to a client falling, tripping and/or getting hit by another vehicle? We are no legal experts, but we believe (in our opinion and shouldn't be relied upon) that drivers must call 9-1-1 as quickly as possible to get help.

After making this emergency call, drivers must stay with their clients to keep them safe. If a client is in shock, retrieve a blanket to keep them warm. Any injuries and open wounds will require pressure to stop the bleeding. If a client took a bad fall, they should not be moved if their head, neck and back are involved in this accident. A client who goes into cardiac arrest will require CPR. Do not compromise badly injured clients. Stay with this client until emergency services arrive to transport them.

As drivers, there is a time to stop working and to think of your client as a family member. They're a part of the Uber family and must be treated with the uppermost respect. Take care of these clients. Protect them from harm. If they happen to get hurt, call for help and stay by their side.

If a client is seriously injured, make sure to report this to Uber so they can keep a record of this event. Unlike car accidents, dealing with clients getting injured before entering a vehicle is a sensitive issue. Handle clients with special care. Watch over these clients to ensure they are safe. Talk to injured clients to calm them. Keep them warm to prevent shock. Don't move any clients who take really bad falls that result in major injury and/or are hit by oncoming car while crossing the road.

Drivers must remain calm to facilitate this event. Think quick on your feet. React as quickly as possible to stabilize client. If necessary, ride with the client to the hospital. Make sure to park your vehicle in a safe place and lock it up. You can use a ridesharing app to request a ride back to your vehicle. Write down the address of this location.

What if another vehicle hits a client walking outside of a car? Or there is a hit-and-run before and after a client uses a ride app service?

These are important questions to ask. Vehicles are speeding down the street. They run red lights. They are easily distracted. Keep an eye out for your clients. Remind them to wash their exit and do pull over in safe places where they don't have to exit vehicles near heavy traffic. Focus on protecting drunk riders. Supervise female clients to make sure they enter their homes safely. Wave at these clients to acknowledge that you are about to depart.

Safety is the most important part of ridesharing. No matter if a client is inside a vehicle or on their way to take a ride, treat them with respect. Be attentive to their needs because they depend on you to keep them safe. Make sure clients wear the safety belts while riding inside your vehicles. No speeding. No running red lights. No running stop lights. Yield to pedestrians. Yield to angry drivers.
